Issue 7 - November/December 2001 Written From My Heart by Laura Elizabeth Bunch America, One Nation Under God? Some of you might disagree with what I’m about to say, but I feel that it must be said. Since September 11th, I’ve seen on TV, read in newspapers, heard on the radio, of people becoming very patriotic. Well, that’s all nice and fine, but have we missed the big picture? Should we say, America, one nation under any god? Is that not what we’ve become? Has our government truly turned to God in this disaster? Have our leaders been seeking God’s guidance? I remember hearing that hundreds of people started going to churches to pray after the 11th. Bible sales went up, Christian bookstores were packed. Now, don’t get me wrong, I think that’s a wonderful thing, but what about right now, are the majority of people who flocked to churches now growing in their relationship with the Lord? Maybe some, but the majority of the people were just looking for a temporary "fix" and when they felt better they went back to their normal (sinful) lives. What about all those Bibles that were purchased the week following the tragedy, do you think the majority of the people who bought them are studying the Word right now? I hope so with all my heart, but my gut feeling is telling me that there are a lot of Bibles out there getting dusty on shelves. God is poring out His judgment and correction on America. Where it is legal to murder unborn babies, where men and women take pleasure in doing that which is unseemly in the sight of God (homosexuality), where people serve many gods, money, their jobs, whatever is more important than God, where morals are not thought of, where children don’t know the difference between right and wrong, where we can’t even put up the Ten Commandments in schools! Is this a nation under God, the One and only God? I don’t think so. If we look at the Bible, what has God repeatedly done to the sinful? He’s corrected and judged them, that’s what! Look at the flood, Tower of Babel, and Sodom and Gomorrah. Look what he did to the Israelites when they turned away from Him; He made them wander in the desert for forty years! How is America any different than those I just mentioned? It’s not, and that is exactly my point. God has used these terrorist attacks as a tool of His judgment, just like He used the flood to destroy the wicked in the Bible. America has not been destroyed, however, it’s been a wake-up call, but are we listening? Are we going to repent before it’s too late and the door on the ark closes? I exhort you, therefore, to get out your Bibles and study God’s Word. "Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take to you the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith you shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints; And for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly, to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in bonds: that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak... Grace be with all them that love our Lord Jesus Christ in sincerity. Amen." - Ephesians 6:11-20 (emphasis added). |
